Not all opposites work the same way
Most tools hand you a list of opposites and leave it there. But English has three different kinds of opposite, and they behave differently in a sentence. Picking the wrong kind is how a sentence ends up saying something you did not mean.
Gradable opposites
These sit at either end of a scale with room in between: hot and cold, big and small, expensive and cheap. Because there is a middle, denying one does not assert the other. Water that is not hot is not therefore cold; it might be warm.
Gradable opposites take intensifiers, which is the quick test: you can say very cold or slightly cold. They also have a default direction. We ask how big is it? about anything, including small things, because big is the unmarked end of the scale.
Complementary opposites
These divide everything into two, with no middle ground: alive and dead, true and false, present and absent. Denying one does assert the other. If a statement is not true, it is false.
They resist intensifiers, which is why very dead reads as a joke rather than a description. Writers sometimes use one gradably for effect, and that effect only works because the reader knows the word is not really gradable.
Relational opposites
These describe the same relationship from two sides: buy and sell, teacher and student, above and below, employer and employee. Neither one is the negative of the other. If Ali sells a car to Sara, Sara buys a car from Ali. One event, two vantage points.
These are the most useful opposites for rewriting a sentence, because swapping the pair lets you change what the sentence emphasises without changing what happened.
Why the distinction matters when you write
Two practical consequences. First, negation: with a gradable pair, not X leaves the reader guessing, so the response was not positive is vaguer than it looks. With a complementary pair, not X is precise.
Second, contrast: a sentence built on a relational pair reads as balanced, while one built on a complementary pair reads as absolute. If a claim feels harsher than you intended, check which kind of opposite is carrying it.
A word can have more than one opposite
The opposite of light is dark or heavy, depending on which sense you mean. The opposite of old is young for people and new for objects. A list of antonyms cannot make that choice for you, because the choice belongs to the sentence, not the word.
When the sense is ambiguous, our word choice guides work through the senses one at a time and say which opposite belongs to each.
