Four things a synonym list cannot tell you

A thesaurus answers one question: which words mean roughly this? That is useful, and it is not the question most writers actually have. The real question is which of these words belongs in this sentence, for this reader. Four things decide that, and a list shows none of them.

1. Register

Words that share a meaning rarely share a setting. Ask, request, enquire and hit up all denote the same act. One belongs in a text message, one in a contract, and putting either in the other place is immediately noticeable.

Most thesauruses print all four side by side with nothing to separate them. Our guides label every alternative as formal, neutral, informal, dated or literary, because that label is usually the whole decision.

2. Connotation

Two words can denote the same thing and judge it differently. Thrifty and stingy describe identical behaviour; one is a compliment. Confident and arrogant, determined and stubborn, slim and skinny work the same way.

Thesauruses only add words. They never warn you off one. A list for happy will quietly include entries that are archaic, that carry a different sense entirely, or that would read as sarcasm in a work email.

3. Collocation

English pairs certain words and refuses others for no reason you can derive from meaning. You make a strong argument and a heavy rain, never a strong rain. You take a quick look, not a rapid one.

A synonym that is correct in isolation can be wrong beside the word next to it. This is the failure that makes a sentence sound not quite native even when every word is defensible.

4. Which sense you actually mean

Common words carry several senses, and a flat list mixes the synonyms of all of them together. Light is a weight, a colour, a source of illumination and a verb. A list that offers pale, weightless and ignite in one block has pushed the hardest part of the work back onto you.

More is not better

Some sites advertise thousands of synonyms for a common word. Past a certain point the extra entries are loose associations rather than substitutes, and a longer list makes the choice harder, not easier. Twenty well-chosen words with register labels beat two thousand ranked by popularity.

That is what the word choice guides are for. Each one takes a single word, groups the alternatives by sense, labels them by register, shows them in real sentences, and says which ones to avoid and why.
